NATIONAL HISTORY

Alpha Phi Alpha, the first intercollegiate Greek-letter fraternity established for African American Men, was founded at Cornell University in Ithaca, New York by seven college men who recognized the need for a strong bond of brotherhood among African descendants in this country. The visionary founders, known as the “Jewels” of the fraternity, are Henry Arthur Callis, Charles Henry Chapman, Eugene Kinckle Jones, George Biddle Kelley, Nathaniel Allison Murray, Robert Harold Ogle, and Vertner Woodson Tandy.

Since its founding on December 4, 1906, Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. has supplied voice and vision to the struggle of African Americans and people of color around the world.

Notable Alphas include: Martin Luther King, Jr.,W.E.B. DuBois, Adam Clayton Powell, Jr., Edward Brooke, Thurgood Marshall, Andrew Young, William Gray, Paul Robeson, Cornel West, John H. Johnson, Jessie Owens, Duke Ellington, Donny Hathaway, Keenan Ivory Wayans, Omari Hardwick, Roland Martin, Stuart Scott, Dick Gregory, Hill Harper, and many others.

ALPHA IN MILWAUKEE

The Delta Chi Lambda Chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha was founded on February 19, 1949. The charter members were Dr. Fred Bobo, Dr. Peter Murrell, Stanley Herbert, Dr. Vincent Bevenue, William (Billy) Ford, George Brawley, Dr. James Carter, Roy Wilson, Emil O'Bee, Dr. Vernon Moore, and Wilbert Thomas

In the 1950's and 1960's, Delta Chi Lambda enjoyed a high influx of members as part of the Great Migration of African-Americans from the rural South to Milwaukee. Some of the highlights of this era include the establishment of the first Alpha scholarship, the first spring formal, and a visit from Rev. Bro. Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr.

Today, the Delta Chi Lambda chapter of Alpha Phi Alpha stands ready to develop leaders, promote brotherhood and academic excellence while providing service and advocacy for the Milwaukee community.

Notable Milwaukee Alphas include: Dr. William Finlayson, Dr. Randle Pollard, Rueben Harpole, Walter Burks, John Daniels, Wayne Embry, Junior Bridgeman, and Jason Fields.
